  1. In the short excerpt “Making News Media More Attractive to Online Users” by Atul Tulshibagwale, he argues that online media is much more productive than traditional media because of the unique innovative ways to present the news to the public. These new innovative ways of presenting media online make it more accessible and convenient for people to use. Some of the new innovative ideas include: slideshows, interactive infographics, video, blog, topic graph, interactive concept introduction, game-like scene rendering, breaking news "tree", issue central, and lastly the "blog-gregate". All of these ideas are enhancing online media by making it clearer, concise, interactive, appealing, opinionated, convenient, and accessible as opposed to the old, boring, and unilateral traditional media.

    6. for the first question: traditional media has a advantage over online media because you don't have to be dependent on the internet or battery life.

    7. Reply to the first question. Some advantages of the old, traditional media entail credibility and the over all significance of what we consider beneficial. Also, since the news was more of collective efforts of major broadcasters nation wide, Americans would get the same news instead of he's individual news bubbles we are in since we all consume news in a variety of different ways. Another thing is we used to religiously catch the news, for some families including mine it would be a part of daily routines either in the morning during breakfast or 6 o clock news. Now the way most people come across news in by "accident" or out of curiosity lead by an outside website that doesn't necessarily have the experience credibility of older, corporatized broadcasters.

    2. Jacob, I think people would rather use online media over traditional media because of its accessibility. For example, when I go onto my facebook I am exposed to an overwhelming amount of articles, articles and news that I am particularly interested in because of my likes on Facebook. Obtaining a newspaper, or turning the television on is not only more demanding than simply opening my phone, but the articles and news might not have my specific interest.

    3. I think its more convenient for the individual to search a particular topic as opposed to reading a news paper with limited information. Personally, I find myself reading interesting articles online because they are topics I would rather read. Also, news on television discuss a variety of topics some positive but mostly negative which I try and avoid!

    4. JUst like the other replies to the question,I believe that the biggest factor in which makes the new way of consuming news is the convenience. this playEda huge role as to why we converted our methods as we are senile to the effects of digital media. as a matter of fact, it has gone a step farther then convenience as there are now two teams of people who strategically figure out how to intentionally distract our minds or how to get us to a particular story. We are subliminally and blindly complying to the new form of news consumption. Other benefits might include different perspectives(first person or un-bias) as well as the speed information can travel around the world and how we can almost instantly receive news that just happened faster than ever.

  5. In Making News Media More Attractive to Online Users the author Tulshibagwale talks about a survey that shows 65% of U.S. online media users say that online media is their life. He also shows how online media is in more used then the traditional newspaper and T.V. media by saying that users appeal to online media more. The reason to why it’s more appealing is because online media has many different unique ways of sending out media to the public. For example slideshows, Interactive infographics, Video, Blog, Topic graph, Interactive Concept Introduction, Game-like scene rendering, Issue central and the "blog-gregate".

    2. as technology grows so does the advantages of technology, for example videos and post. with this it has been shown that people would rather read or watch short little snip its of news rather then read a long article. so with that it can be made a theory that news papers will die out even on the internet.

    3. Matt, I feel that news will eventually be delivered through technology. Although there are some individuals who are not tech savvy and prefer traditional news, one day that will be replaced/outdated with strictly internet as a news source but as of right now some still chose having news delivered to their homes and prefer television news.

  7. Is online news more beneficial than news you find in the newspapers or on TV? In what way(s) is it or is it not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. there's a reason that online news is winning the race against traditional news and its because it gives more info about the place in which the news is being broadcast and more info on the actual thing. for example when going to online news we get access to videos and can search up anything that doesn't make sense to use. that's why online news is more beneficial.

      Delete
    2. Online news is more beneficial than newspapers and TV because the internet can give us access to much more information than a newspaper or TV show can give us. For example, you can look up related articles to a certain topic online, which you are unable to do using a newspaper. Online gives readers much more accessibility to information than TV or newspapers ever will.

  8. In a brief article, “Physicians, Social Media, and Conflicts of Interest,” by Matthew DeCamp argues that social media can debilitate a trust in a physician. The author states that social media creates more problems with physicians and their patients. It is harder to diagnose an issue if the physician cannot see the patient. Social media may cause ethical problems such as a physician not acting like a professional amongst his or her patient. There are no ethical guidelines for a physician in social media. The effects may have a negative outcome that may lead to undesired behavioral situations.

  11. The Millennials generation, according to new studies, are more cynical and less trusting than either their parents’ or the so-called Generation X of the 1990s. In the 1970s, roughly a third of all high school students – today’s Baby Boomers – agreed that people can generally be trusted. By contrast, only 18% of all Gen Xers agreed with this sentiment in the 90s and only 16% of all Millennials in 2012. Moreover, the Millennials have less faith in traditional educational institutions than any other generation to come before them. A number of causes have been cited for this trend including the series of catastrophes, wars, public scandals, and the massive economic meltdown that characterized the era in which the Millennials came of age and the fact that, generally speaking, most young generations come of age less trusting of the world than their predecessors. Despite the Millennials’ lack of trust towards the authority figures and institutions of their time, they remain a fairly optimistic generation with the majority of them believing that, despite the difficulties they face, they will eventually triumph against the odds and be victorious. It is also suspected that the unprecedented rise of online social networking may be contributing to this seemingly paradoxical sense of optimism.

    2. No, I don't think you can trust news if its made by anyone. When comparing multiple sites, if there is an overlap between stories and the majority of the information is the same between both sites, then I'll assume that the story or the information is accurate. On the other hand, if a certain website says something that another website cannot back up, then I'll assume that the information is not accurate.

    3. If you know trusted sites that report news stories, yes. But not if you're searching and come across some unknown site, and the person behind it is just a young kid posting everything they hear or read.

    4. No, your sources should always be known before listening to the story. There are always stories online that have been proven to dishonest and even misleading even after the articles have gone viral. Online news is difficult to trust because your not always guaranteed a credible source. Although I read most of the news online I do research in order to confirm these stories that I find a particular interest in!

  13. 1. Why are large companies such as NBC and PBS creating accounts on social media sites such as Pinterest to get their news out there instead of their own site now?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Taymur, unfortunately our generation, the "Millennials" are obsesssed with social media. It seems as though we can live our lives through it. In my opinion it isn't convenient to go to a companies website to read the news when I can go on my facebook and see links to all sorts of news sources. That being said, since most of the people in the world are on social media, it makes sense for large companies to spread their stories and articles where everyone seems to be online.

    2. Because who really visits the sites for NBC or PBS? Specialized home pages offer relevant information for exactly one organization or service but generalized sites like Pinterest or Tumblr offer a wide variety of news and services, meaning that they naturally receive more traffic and are accordingly better places to publicize.

  15. Gilbert Clark, an assistant professor at Harvard, studies the correlation between newspaper industries and the Internet. Gilbert proposes that technology is a key factor in a company’s success, but only if they use it in the correct way. When interviewing the top 100 newspaper corporations, half said that they take 75 percent of what is written in the newspaper, is then posted online. The other half of the industry creates new content which is not seen in newspapers and puts it online. What Gilbert saw was that companies without a print industry, developed more traffic to their website, due to the fact that people could not buy a newspaper, but could just view the content online.

  16. Is Facebook/Social Media the addiction or is the introduction to new technology(cell phones) the real addiction?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they are both equally addictive. I find myself on Facebook or other social media whenever I have a free moment. And when new phones come out, people get sucked in trying to figure it out and checking out all the cool new apps they have. It's so easy to pull out your phone and get on social media and get updated on day to day events.

      Delete
    2. Ariane, I personally believe that they both are very addictive. As technology advances, it makes it easier for us to access social media. Social media gives us the ability to stay in touch with friends all over the world, stay up to date with news, activities, and events. You get to see what all of your friends are up to, and share what you are doing. It's and activity in itself, so just like any other activity, it can be addictive.

      Delete
    3. I believe that both cell phones and social media are addictions, but I find myself more addicted to social media. When I’m bored, I often find myself pulling out my phone and checking social media in order to see what my friends are up to, as well as events happening in the news or in sports. The cell phone itself is an addiction, but the things it can access, such as social media, provides for a bigger addiction.

      Delete
    4. Cellphones in isolation are just simple long-range communications devices, essentially just very fancy Walkie-Talkies. I don't recall anyone being "addicted" to their cellphones in the late 1990s before other peripheral "smartphone" features were attached to them (web browsers, cameras, apps, etc.) so I don't think it can be that cellphones are inherently addictive.

  19. The ways in which we consume news are greatly changing as technology finds a way to make it easier and more efficient to get to. Online platforms make it user friendly and more appealing to the modern generation. Journalists now have technological tools for making visual and interactive ways of interpretation. However, this improved method of gathering and sharing news is assisting in deterioration of news organizations. Through the revolution of the Internet, we have seen improvements in news gathering and accessibility. Conversely, some Internet sourced news seems to be less accurate than the old fashion newspaper.

  27. In this article, it argues that when news breaks, social media and other online sources can disrupt the true facts to what really took place. People who have access to police scanners take to social media and report what they hear without any true knowledge. Scanners are now available on smartphone apps, making it easy for people to report their own news which isn’t always accurate. The ease of access that the everyday man has to get quick and unfiltered or unconfirmed information and churn it out as news has become a mini “News Epidemic,” resulting in a large amount of unconfirmed information available across the world in minutes. Social media breaks up facts and misconstrues events that have taken place, it’s not a reliable source of news.

When news breaks, scanners and social media can create a cloud of errors for news outlets (Posted 2013-09-17 19:24:26): Erroneous reports hop quickly from law enforcement scanners to Twitter to traditional media reports.

AND RECOMMENDATIONS”, Mark D. Griffiths responds to Andraessen and colleague’s research to Facebook addiction and the excessive use for for social networking sites. Is “Facebook” an addiction or is it possible that the addiction has been replaced or become obsolete all together. Facebook was once a way for individuals to strictly communicate but now it’s used in a variety of different activities that the user can engage in. Griffiths believes that “Facebook” topic is too broad of an assessment in order to receive accurate research; but more specifically “social network sites” would be more appropriate and can be justified.
