  1. When making a decision do you incorporate emtions? If so why do you incorporate emotions? If not, why don't you incorporate emotions?

    1. I don't know that it's actually possible for people to make decisions that aren't motivated to some extent by our emotions. I don't feel that our emotions are some divorced facet of our faculties that exist separately from our rational side.

  2. When making a decision, does your intuition overpower careful thinking?

    1. A reminder to everyone. Try not to use "yes" and "no" questions. They are less likely to lead to discussion.

    2. There are many bad habits I find stubbornly difficult to break despite my best efforts but I'm also finding myself getting better and better at learning from past experiences.

    3. I believe that intuition will always overpower careful thinking when the thought needs to be made fast. Because intuition is basically you subconscious already putting the pieces together. But if a thought can take time for the brain to dwell on, the feeling intuition begins to get understanding and can allow the conscious a reason for why this feeling was brought on.

    4. I think this depends on the situation or what emotions are involved. Just like the essay mentioned that some situations may bring up psychological trauma from a previous events that may manifest in physically and physiologically. With that being said, I feel like intuition only plays a big role in my decision making only if I had negative experiences from a similar situation, in which my decision making will be slightly altered or blindly bias because of the effect the previous similar situation had on me.

  3. Have you ever created a goal for yourself that you thought was not achievable? If so, why would you create a goal that you had doubts about?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I have many in fact. Even if there is doubt in my mind, that doesn't mean it can not be achieved. It's the challenge that is exciting, and if you achieve the goal that you doubted, it is that much more rewarding.

      Delete
    2. My goals consist of practical goals that may seem very out of reach now but are realistically possible. From an outside point view, some of my goals may seem un-achievable but if you don't reach farther than your boundaries then you will never pass them. For example, I would like to make over six figures(realistic) one day but I know I'm physically unlikely to succeed in sports and don't have a desire or time allowed in my current situation to dedicate myself to become something as interesting as an astronaut.

    3. I have always found myself creating goals that may be unreachable because I feel as if that gives me a greater incentive to try and accomplish the task and end up reaching the unachievable goal. Although, creating goals, which are hard to achieve can be demoralizing, people should gain a stronger sense of self-respect if they recognize the hard work they put into when trying to reach their goal. Therefore, I create goals I might have doubts about in order to work harder even though it may not result in me achieving my goal.

    4. I've had goals that I had doubt about achieving because of my lack of self confidence and my ability to overcome the obstacles. For many people the goal seemed achievable but for me it seemed almost impossible. But these goals allowed me to push yourself through situations and scenarios that I didn't think I could obtain but overcoming and achieving those obstacles are part of self growth and success! By accomplishing these goals its given me confidence and the ability to believe in myself. This feeling of confidence and achievement makes me want to set more goals with higher standards!

  5. Do you have transcendent moments? If so, where does your mind take you and how often does this happen?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I often find my mind wandering when I don't want it to and training it to remain focused longer has been an ongoing personal struggle. Oftentimes, my mind branches off into various topics of interest and discussions inside my head starting from things I've just heard.

      Delete
    2. i always have transcendent moments, there is not a day where my mind does not wonder. my mind has weird places it takes me when i enter a transcendent moment it could be in my room at home or even the room i'm in. i have had moments where i have been transcended in the same room i'm in but i wasn't looking in front of me, but my mind was just repainting the room.

      Delete
    3. I believe that everyone has transcendent moments because people cannot go day-to-day only focusing on one task or idea without their mind wandering. I do not have a specific number of times where I find myself having transcendent moments, but I find that my mind drifts quite easily, so they occur on a frequent basis. I usually think about ideas, stories, or other possible thoughts, which relate to the original topic at hand.

      Delete
    4. i think every person in the world has transcendent moments because it is hard for people to focus on one particular idea and not wondering about other tasks. i sometimes want to think about one thing and my mind makes me think about something else.

  6. Have you ever had a gut instinct about someone or something? Whether bad or good, how do you react to it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes. It is important to trust your instincts, especially when they're as well-honed as mine are. My hunches always lead me somewhere interesting if not necessarily "correct" or "safe".

      Delete
    2. Yes I have had a gut instinct about someone. what my gut told me about this person was they were terrible with money and that this person would never pay back his debts. i ignored my gut instinct about him and let him barrow 30 dollars and i still haven't seen that money back. the lesson learned was to trust my gut.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I usually have a gut instinct about any situation I am put in, especially surrounding important decisions. Whether its about a person or a situation, I find that it is best to trust my gut instinct because it is better than being influenced by outside ideas. I believe people should be dominated by their own thoughts and instincts instead of being pressured by other people’s opinions.

      Delete
    4. I have a gut instinct about everything that happens in my life, whether it is to reply with a comment or physically remove myself from an environment. Depending on the situation, I have no choice other than to use my gut instinct, if I am given the opportunity to think before acting I will assess the situation and determine if my gut instinct is correct. For example, my friends attempted to convince me to stay up late and play video games, ignoring my parents rule of playing games past midnight. My gut told me to sleep and that something bad potentially could happen, well within the next ten minutes my dad came into my room and took away my computer. That was a scenario in which my gut instinct was helping me out. On the other side when I went to dinner with my friends and saw the delicious fresh food I bought some because my gut instinct told me to. When I went home thirty minutes later, my mom had made my favorite meal, now I had wasted money and couldn't eat my favorite meal fresh. I tend to lean towards my gut instinct when I think about feeling good.

  7. Have you ever had a feeling of fear or worry, not knowing exactly what or why? Has that feeling ever turned into a reality?

    1. actually it happens to me all the time. when i am worried or feeling sad, it always something is happening to me like i hear bad news that day or the next day.

      Delete
    2. I had this feeling happen to me many times before. Often, it comes with elongated stress. I would describe it as a feeling of always being worried with a great deal of physical stress on your body. It comes after something where i have been behind on rent for a week and even after i catch up on everything i still feel like i owe something. This feeling also comes when i work too much. On several occasions, because i am a general manager, i had to work 2 weeks to a month with literally no days off, most days consisting of 12 hour days. When i finally do get a day off, i have a feeling that i have to go into work and i never get to truly relax. Next thing you know my day off was over and i never get to really enjoy a day off.

    3. A lot of my days when I work at Bestbuy mobile, I feel anxious about upgrading someones phone or plan because I might mess up even if its a mistake I could correct. The fact that not only my manager gets pissed off at you where she can be extremely unprofessional, but also the customer can get extremely impatient puts a lot of pressure on you whether or not an employee knows exactly what they are doing. Upgrading a phone or a plan can sometimes be like finding a needle in a haystack. It can be chaotic and at times it can just blow up in your face metaphorically speaking.

  8. Is having a transcendence period, or “unfocused free time” important to the creative process in the brain? Why or why not? Should companies continue to allow periods of time to be taken off for unfocused free time?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe that we need to escape this world to be creative, because the world offers too many distractions for us to be creative. It also would be smart for companies to allow unfocused free time, because focusing on work, or the here and now doesn't allow enough time to concentration on the future.

      Delete
    2. I think having a transcendence period is very important to the creative mind. It is great that companies give their engineers time to work on whatever they want. In the end this will benefit the company more than the engineer. The company will have thousands of new ideas.

      Delete
    3. i think also, having unfocused free time important to everyone. it is hard for a person to focus all year at work and not develop ideas from their duties and also get distracted.

      Delete
    4. It is important to have free time with busy lives such as being a student or working full time. Especially in the work environment, people need time to either cool off or take a break from 8 to 12 hour shifts in one day. People need to relax for a few moments to gather their thoughts. Without "free time", people will eventually start breaking down.

  9. Is setting challenging or too high of goals for oneself harmful? Or does it help motivate the person to work harder in order to achieve their goal and receive an award? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Any goal that obviously cannot be reached sets you up for inevitable failure and demoralization and demoralization is more devastating than any single individual instance of failure.

      Delete
    2. I believe it depends on the person to start with. Some people can be discouraged once they have set the goal and realized on the path to achieving it that it is far beyond reach, resulting in failure. Now others may never be satisfied unless they can grab what they've been desiring, something can mean so much to an individual that it can drive them to success and greatness, ultimately reaching the goal. There can be goals set that one might never reach, but that doesn't necessarily mean they will become demoralized.

  10. In what circumstances is using your gut instinct better than deliberately thinking a situation through? Why is one better than the other?

    ReplyDelete

    1. In situations that could lead to potential danger, such as walking down a dark alley. I have walked alone at night many times and if I feel just a little off about where I am at I will turn around and head home or somewhere busy. I would rather trust my gut than have to think my way through a dangerous scenario.

    4. WOOPS! I DONT KNOW HOW TO DELETE THE FIRST ONE. THIS IS THE REVISED ONE!

I feel that using your gut instincts and thinking a situation through goes hand in hand. It is very useful when reading your surroundings in order to be aware of what’s going on and whether your in a safe environment. In order to use your gut instincts you should listen understand what your mind and body is telling you. If something feels wrong and you suddenly find yourself in a dangerous place, or around a threatening individual with a gun you should listen to that voice in your head telling you to not trust that person or "get the hell out of there"! In those situations I feel that using your gut instinct is effective but also think the situation through in order to take the next step!

    6. It is hard to say which is better, you can only say after the situation has occurred, you can look back and make an assessment. We have gut instincts for specific reasons, and in my experience they usually work out for the better. For example in a serious situation you don't have time to sit there and think about what you should do, you just have to react based off of gut instinct and hope that your intuition is correct. It also depends on the situation, if there is time to think, then think out the possibilities and approach with whatever method you deem worthy, whether it be your gut instinct or the other method you deliberately thought out. If there isn't time to think, then you must react with your gut instinct.

  16. In your opinion can senses (like the sense of seeing a spider, causing fear) go away if ignored?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it depends on each individual, maybe one person can learn to ignore that feeling of fear, while someone else may not be able to train their brain that way and so the fear remains.

      Delete
    2. No, I feel that it is a sudden urge or an irresistible response depending on the person. Its very hard to see a snake or spider and automatically ignore or not react unless you see it coming. Your instincts are far more powerful than the ability to ignore them unless you train yourself repetitively.

      Delete
    3. i think it is depends of the person how to react to things like animals, insects, etc. i don't think it is something that we can ignore sudden fear. it is some kind of feeling which everyone have.

      Delete
    4. I believe that those senses of automatically feeling fear can disappear of ignored. When I was younger I was deathly afraid of spiders, I would scream and cry if they were in my room and then grab my dad to remove them from my presence. As I grew older and started to think how small they were they became less and less relevant and scary. At this point in my life I no longer associate fear when I see a spider near me, I am able to simply notice it and then remove it. This is my experience, now something else could possibly mean way more to me and therefore trigger the same sense every time. It is for sure unique to each and every individual.

  17. in your opinion how does default network affect business?

  21. What are some things we can do routinely to avoid becoming stuck in tunnel vision?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the best way to avoid tunnel vision or just focusing on one given thing, is by using the unfocused free time to our advantage. Being able to set aside time where you are not working on important projects like homework for example, is a very important tool that needs to be utilized because it not only allows for your brain to take a mental break, but also provides for less distractions when you attempt to work on the project. Also, the thoughts resulting from unused free time may also relate to the initial project you are working on and can give you a different perspective, which will help complete the work.

      Delete
    2. It's hard to avoid tunnel vision, I often times find myself struggling to avoid it. One of the things I do in attempt to avoid it is by thinking of multiple paths to my end goal. For example I want to serve as a officer in the army. I struggle to convince myself that there are other options other than West Point. I think it takes a certain level of maturity and self-realization because as much as I want to go to West Point, I realize that there is ROTC, Green to Gold, Officer Candidate School, etc. I use my friends and families to help me think of other ways because I often associate my end goal with emotions, becoming attached and developing what we call tunnel vision.

  23. Do you feel that an individuals emotional impulses should be ignored? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sometimes it's hard to ignore such a strong feeling. And sometimes emotional impulse can be a positive thing. But I have also seen the ugly side. I think it's important for an individual to think just a little before they react, because that reaction can have a profound affect on someone or something else. So, although the outcome may have consequences, I don't think all emotional impulses should be ignored but maybe think before you react.

      Delete
    2. I don't think it should be ignored but rather the exact opposite. We should completely understand our emotional impulses and it's effect on our decision making to control our minds during altered states cause by emotions.

      -Chris panlilio

      Delete
    3. in some cases emotional impulses should be ignored because they end up gaining you nothing or harming yourself and others. for example the thought of suicide can be a emotional impulse but if we all went with our emotions we could end up getting us nowhere or end up hurting the people closes to us.

      Delete
    4. They should not be ignored, but thought out carefully. We should always try to understand our emotional impulses, they make us feel a specific way for some reason. At the same time, emotional impulses are not thought out, they are created on the spot, so if we act on these impulses they more than often can have negative effects. For example my younger brother insulted me on my goals and aspirations, at the time I was so angry and frustrated, my emotions were all over the place and it ended in me attempting to put him down as well. I personally believe that it is not the right thing to seek revenge, but my emotional impulses drove me against that.

  24. In your opinion, do you feel that careful deliberation out ways intuition?

  25. Why is it believed that having unfocused free time is important? Aka "transcendence", when your brain detaches itself from external environments.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfocused free time is very important for someone to have because it creates a more creative mind, as well as allowing for people to focus on one given task instead of having your brain fight between thoughts while multitasking. Focusing on one given task saves us from distractions, which lead from doing multiple things at once. Unfocused free time where you can let your mind wander and focus on less important things, save us from losing attention on the important task we need to complete.

  26. How is it that our minds can go into a transcendent mode?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I personally never exactly felt it for sure but I feel it requires deep meditation, full relaxation, as well as a completely free mind. It's something that I feel one would have to practice to completely achieve. In a theology class in high school, we would turn off the lights and have a daily 10 minute meditation during a calming story or music with our eyes closed. If I ever did reach anything close to true transcendence, it was later on in the year after I practices and accepted the daily meditation.

Many idea's go into order when people are in that state of mind so i do not thing human's would function well without it.
